A High School in Buffalo
In 1957, the Eudists accepted responsibility for the administration of a diocesan Catholic high school in Buffalo, New York: Cardinal Dougherty High School. The prospect of recruiting Eudist candidates in the United States prompted the Congregation’s authorities to accept this ministry. In spring 1957, a founding committee of four Eudists and two lay people was formed. The school opened in September that year: 75 students were divided into five ninth-grade classes and temporarily housed at Assomption Elementary School while construction of the building was being completed. On March 21, 1958, students and teachers moved into their new school.
In 1978, the Diocese of Buffalo changed its financial policy for supporting diocesan schools; some of them, including Cardinal Dougherty, faced possible closure. The diocesan authorities then offered the Congregation full responsibility for the school, but it declined. The Eudists left this ministry in 1979.
